1 continued) When you look at a picture in a magazine, try looking at the different decorating elements individually, separating them in you mind. For instance, when looking at room where wrought iron pieces are used as decorating elements, look first at the picture and try to notice just the color of the wrought iron. What effect does just the color and texture have on the room. Try picturing the piece in different colors and imagine the effects, either good or bad. Don’t give thought to the size and shape of the piece, that will come later. Once you have an understanding of how the color of that piece has effected the decorating scheme and thus the room move on to other elements of the piece. Wrought iron pieces often feature curly-cues and are a great choice for accent pieces. When you see such pieces used in a decorating scheme in a magazine, try visualizing differently shaped items in the same place. Consider the shape, size and position. For example, a discarded or brand new piece of wrought iron fencing or gate could be used to create a headboard for a bed when hung on the wall behind the mattress, but what if, in the same room, the piece were to be used behind a chair or settee? What if it was partially obscured by a large chest of drawers or dresser? What if it included other pieces of the fence and covered the whole wall behind the mattress? What if ivy and silk flower garlands were weaved through it for a completely romantic look? What would you use for an complimenting accent? Many times Victorian lampshades or accents will work right in with the wrought iron pieces, blending the two looks together.
